JFK Jr. and India Dear Editor, While we offer our heartfelt condolences to the Kennedy and Bassett families, press (www.timesofindia.com, July 20) published a little known story. As a part of his undergraduate program at Brown University, JFK, Jr. was required to write a paper on Indian Democracy. A student, in general, would go to the library, study newspapers, magazines and books and then write the paper. But JFK, Jr went to India. He lived modestly in "a non-descript Shivalik Lodge in dingy Paharganj" of New Delhi for 60 days. He traveled around Lodhi Colony, Parliament street and Connaught place in autorickshaws and forbade the US embassy to keep in touch with him. He attended breakfasts with PM Indira Gandhi and President Giani Zail Singh. He asked the PM the need to impose emergency, corruption, poverty and the Punjab problem. President Carter's mother lived in India as a Peace Corp volunteer. Mayor Jerry Brown visited India and studied Buddhism. Congressman Tom Cambell spent his honeymoon in India. Satyen Das Dear Editor, I'd like to say thanks to your magazine for providing a wonderful opportunity through the advertisements. My wife successfully secured a job in the Sunnyvale area. She's an electric engineer and got the address from an ad in IndZine and applied for the job. Thanks a lot. I hope the ads in your magazine will help a lot more people in the future. Anonymous (phone message) Dear Editor, Congratulations! I admire your editorials as they have always inspired me both as a mother and as a human being. The first column I always read in IndZine is your editorial. They are very heart-touching! However, it was not until I read your recent editorial (Wings - July 15
INDZINE)) that I really felt this urge to express my thanks to you. Your editorial was
superb! It brought tears to my eyes! Radha Vadde, Dear Editor, I simply loved your editorial. After reading it I've also made a major decision. I'm going to send my kids to India for a holiday with their grand parents. They deserve it and so do my parents and in-laws. I always had the intentions but never had the guts! Your editorial decided for me. Rajiv Roy Did you like this story ? |
