Are we living in a jungle? - By Meena Yeggina.

Anjana Mishra's rape case in Orissa is not only sad but merely sickening. This estranged Indian Forest Service Officer's wife who after divorce is merely asking her dowry money back, gets raped instead! Are we living in a civilized world? Or worse, is India capable of ever being a civilized nation?

In a country where day to day life is filled with mythical stories and beliefs (remember Pardes? How the heroine drives away a snake with a namaskar?) in a country where the morals of epics Ramayan and Mahabharat karma rule the beliefs of millions, how can we expect more?

In a country where even Sita is not spared (Poet Valmiki always refers Sita as either Susroni   a woman with good breasts or Sumadheyi a woman with good waist. Also, all main male characters in Ramayan including Hanuma, Ravan, Lakshman describe all parts of Sita: Her thighs are compared to the trunk of an elephant and Valmiki goes into a lot more details with a vivid description of all of Sita's parts! For more you can refer Ramayan or any of its original translations!), in a country where Karma is the basis of all happenings (if this is the way it happened, may be it's meant to happen this way!) What else can we expect?

While the whole US is agog with disgust towards Clinton for having oral sex with a willing woman, why is nothing being done about a state Home Minister who tried to seduce Anjana Mishra for asking his help in her divorce case? Can anything be worse? A minister who's supposed to save tries to have sex? What kind of government is this? It's an open fact that many Ministers in India have two or more wives. Our Indian impotent intelligentsia are noting it as a 'natural' phenomena. Our movies still portray a wife as a slave (recent eg. Hum Aapke Dil Main Rehte Hain. And I thought Kajol was different!)

I'm simply disgusted! I'm also tired of hearing pleas of women asking for help. Don't ask! Do it yourself! It's time women do their own helping, own talking, own fighting instead of relying on the judgement of others. (I know it's extremely difficult in a world with a culture that hails soft-spoken, fully covered, highly slaving woman. A woman who expresses her feelings openly is considered chalu and loud.) This, however, would only be the first step. Openly discouraging derogatory remarks on a woman's looks, shapes and figures is the second! I also call on all the intellectuals and ask them not to remain silent in the midst of their study rooms, wide University libraries and internet interactions. It's time they come out and use their brains for better causes! Please, don`t let there be any more Anjana Mishras!
