From the Editor's Desk
WHAT ABOUT FATHER? Indzine has always been criticized as a magazine biased in favor of women. Editorials leaning toward women issues, articles in support of women and so on. Upon reflection, I agree with the critics. As a woman editor, I tend to lean more toward women's issues. We even did a story on women for Mother's Day, but never anything for Father's Day. We didn't cover the fathers even in our Question of the Month column. What a grave error! In a day and age where men are striving hard to change their roles as a parent and husband, it's preposterous not to mention them in a magazine meant for the entire family as we boast our magazine to be! So we decided we'll try to correct our error (at least a little) by honoring our Indian fathers who are working hard to be dedicated and responsible. Mind you, in this day and age, the definition of good fathers has changed drastically. During my childhood, a good father is one who paid all the bills in time and disciplined your behavior. The rest is mom's responsibility: classes, homework, clothes, diapers. But now a good father is he who shares all the responsibilities of rearing a child be there when the child is born, change diapers, sing the child to sleep, feed the child, attend school functions, play ball, etc. etc. Several psychological studies and two parent work schedule have made the role of the father in a child's life as important as that of a mother, if not more. A good father is always a role model for children. In my eight years stay in the US, I have seen many Indian fathers who spend a lot of time with their kids, not just disciplining them or making them do homework very qualitatively. They all do it willingly and voluntarily and most of them seem to be enjoying it too. Commented my friend's husband to me recently, Now that my children sleep in their own room, I do miss them a lot. This is truly amazing as at one time fathers longed to get their kids to sleep separately. I know of so many good fathers (including my husband) it's impossible to mention them all in our cover story, Changing Role of Fathers (see Cover Story). But we'd like to recognize them all by dedicating this Father's Day issue of Indzine to all those proud, loving and caring fathers who are bound to make a difference in the lives of their kids!
