MOVIE REVIEW: Arzoo (Hindi) Starring: Madhuri Dixit, Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali
Khan, Aruna Irani, Paresh Rawal, Reema Lagoo, Laxmikant Berde, Amrish Puri
Lawrence D'Souza goes back to his first love cinematography much more than being a director. The pleasing songs and their picturization are what strings together this otherwise forgettable film. Vijay (Akshay Kumar), a pilot by profession, falls in love with Pooja (Madhuri Dixit) [or is it vice-versa], daughter of millionaire Dayashanker (Amrish Puri). But Dayashanker has other plans for his spoilt and pampered daughter. He has already promised his dying friend that his son Amar (Saif Ali) would some day be his son-in-law (where have we heard this before?). Amar of course lives abroad thus giving the director liberty to shoot at exotic foreign locales. Let's add to the melodrama, Amar who is in love with Pooja from his childhood days is heartbroken to learn that Pooja loves Ajay the pilot. Being the ever-sacrificing true love, Amar convinces Dayashanker (the father of Pooja) to get Pooja and Ajay engaged/married. Don't laugh, but the story continues. Amar send the pilot (Ajay) out on an errand asking him to use his (Amar's) plane. Then Boom, Kaboom, the plane blows up in mid-air. Pooja realizes that she is pregnant with Ajay's child. The ever-sacrificing true love (Amar) steps in and agrees to marry Pooja and give a name to her child. Of course, Pooja still has to be pavitra; so no sex after marriage. Ajay, the blown to smithereens pilot, turns up without a scratch a few scenes later sprouting a fresh bush under his nose and with a different set of colored eyes. Thinking that Amar wanted him out of the scene, Ajay teams up with Amar's shakuni mama (Paresh Rawal) not knowing that shakuni mama was responsible for deleting Amar's (foreign bred's) lineage. It's surprising that Madhuri Dixit agreed to do the role of the dumb bimbo (a dance every 25 minutes) though she eventually turns out to be the only likeable person in the film. Though her role has not been shaped well, she rises above the script. Akshay Kumar sings and dances his way through the film but it's time he realized that he is an actor and begins to act. Saif Ali has little to do and he's forgiven as maybe Arzoo was his last film after Yeh Dillagi he really has a long long way to go. Anu Malik's two songs are long remembered even after one leaves the theatre Ab tere bin and Saajan, saajan. Did you like this article ?
