India
Telugu Desam Party(TDP) President and Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Chandrababu Naidu, has been described by the "Asian Wall Street Journal" as the biggest winner in Indian elections after Prime Minister Vajpayee and also he SECOND MOST POWERFUL PERSON IN INDIA. In the recently held elections simultaneously to State Assembly and Parliament, TDP came triumphant in both, along with its alliance partner BJP. In state Assembly, TDP obtained near two thirds majority. For parliament elections, TDP secured twenty nine seats and BJP seven out of total offorty two Parliament seats from Andhra. TDP has emerged as the largestregional party (as predicted in September Indzine) and largest supporter to National Democratic Alliance (NDA next to BJP in Parliament. The journal said the twin victories had underscored the importance of regional parties in national politics and proved that economic leadership of the nation, even if it demanded belt-tightening, could be a political winner. Chandrababu had emerged as a model for fellow state leaders who, under the free market reform program of India, have a larger role in modernizing the country. |
