We Indians are all immigrants in this country;
except of course the temporary tourists and visitors. In fact, so
are all Americans, who have emigrated to this country, down the
ages, for various reasons. All immigrants have freely chosen and
decided, for their own reasons, to settle down and make America
their new home. This is a very traumatic and difficult decision
for all first generation immigrants, who were born and brought up
elsewhere, with their emotional memories and attachments in their
respective places of origin. Once this decision is made, its essential
that the immigrant 'cuts his or her umbilical cord, and strikes
roots here, professionally, socially and politically. Its only natural
for people from he same place of origin and background to settle
down and cling together for their emotional security and social
interaction. But this tendency must not create 'exclusive islands,
hoping to recreate their place of origin, as it was when they migrated.
This is a great opportunity for us to discard our inherited bad
and undesirable habits while retaining our good values and heritage.
At the same time we must selectively absorb the good in our new
environment and avoid the bad. Unfortunately it is easier and attractive
to retain the bad and absorb the bad; often leading to very loud
obnoxious claims of superior values, while exhibiting the worst
in both cultures. WE MUST BE LIVING EXAMPLES OF THE BEST IN OUR
INHERITED CULTURE AND THE NEW CULTURE WE HAVE ASSIMILATED..
Since LANGUAGE is the most important means of communication; we
must learn and develop our communication skills, with our younger
generations and our new environment. Mother tongue or the language
of our parents before immigration is desirable for ethnic, emotional
and cultural identity. But very good control and command of the
language of our new environment is far more important and essential
for successful integration and surviving competition. It is an irony
of history, that good grammatical English we learned from our British
imperialists combined with our strong mathematical and general knowledge
heritage has made us the International Gurus of the Computer and
Internet Age. Let us hope we will not destroy this Divine Opportunity
by the regional languages rapidly replacing English and dividing
India; while all infrastructure facilities are fast collapsing due
to political indifference. First generation immigrants often try
to live by the cultural values they were born and brought up in
and find it extremely hard to understand, adapt and accept the cultural
values of their new generation, in which the second generation immigrants
are born and brought up in. This conflict between the two generations
can be and often are very traumatic, with unfortunate results, unless
managed with great tolerance, care, understanding and respectful
restraint. Dress code, standards of sexual behavior, free mixing
of males and females of all ages and their sense of equality, family
relationships are all areas of extreme stress and strain.
"Unity in Diversity" of all types is an unrealistic paradox. Diversity
does not lead to conflict, so long as all can thrive independently.
But as and when acute struggle for survival occurs, the different
diverse groups and interests struggling for survival will destroy
the opponents by every means at its disposal. In this struggle for
survival , there is no morality. This is the Law of Nature. All
diverse groups continuously intermingle and amalgamate into a new
group. All societies are dynamic organisms continuously changing,
evolving and mutating, some faster than others. With rapid communication
and free fast movement of people all over the world Homo sapiens
are in one global village, with no pure races. US and Canadian American
nation is the fastest growing and changing society and economy in
the world only because its the only area in the world where the
best from all over the world are attracted and welcomed to be absorbed
and digested into the regular streamline.
