In the thrilling and, the best final ever in the tournament history, top seeded Hewitt took on number two seeded Agassi. Agassi seeking his 50th ATP tour title and fifth title to play in the bay area put on a tough fight with current world champion Hewitt. This is the first time, the top two seeded players have ever advanced to the Siebel Open final, since the second seeded Pete Sampras beat top seeded Agassi in 1996. Hewitt spent much of the Siebel Open on the defensive. He struggled to beat little known Michael Llodra in the 1st round, and he has to save four match points to come over powerful Srichaphan of Thailand in the 2nd round. Agassi, who turns 32 next month and ranked 5th in the world, started the match by winning 1st set and had multiple opportunities to put away 21 year old Hewitt in the 2nd and 3rd set. Hewitt rose to the challenge once again after he lost to Agassi in the first set, and played the best tennis in the 2nd & 3rd sets to win the finals by 4-6, 7-6(8-6), 7-6(7-4) for his 13th carrier title and the first title to win in San Jose. The final lasted 2 hours 57 minutes. Tournament runner up Agassi received $30,300 prize money and this year champion Hewitt received $51,500 prize money.
